South Side Pittsburgh Family Guide: Parks, Trails & Hidden Gems
Pittsburgh's South Side has a reputation as a nightlife district, but families who live there or explore beyond East Carson Street know it's also home to excellent parks, one of Pittsburgh's best riverfronts, and a collection of neighborhood gems that don't make the typical tourist lists. Here's what families should know about the South Side.
Ormsby Park & Spray Park
Ormsby Park on the South Side Flats is one of Pittsburgh's better neighborhood parks. In summer, the spray park is a hit with kids under 10 โ it's free, open during park hours, and well-maintained by the city. The park also has basketball courts, a playground, and open lawn space. It gets busy on hot summer days but rarely feels overcrowded.
The South Side Trail
The South Side Trail runs along the Monongahela River and connects to Pittsburgh's broader Three Rivers Heritage Trail system. It's flat, paved, and excellent for family bike rides โ you can rent bikes at several spots near the trail. The river views are beautiful, and the trail is generally calm and unhurried compared to trails closer to downtown. On weekends, families from across Pittsburgh come to use it.
Grandview Avenue & Mount Washington
Technically Mount Washington rather than the South Side, Grandview Avenue (accessible via the Monongahela or Duquesne Inclines from the South Side) offers the most famous views of the Pittsburgh skyline. Kids love the Inclines โ the historic funicular railroads are both a fun ride and a Pittsburgh institution. The round-trip Incline ride, the view at the top, and a stop at one of the Grandview restaurants make for a memorable family outing.
South Side Slopes & Winding Trails
The hillside neighborhoods above the South Side Flats โ collectively known as the South Side Slopes โ are a Pittsburgh original: steep streets, narrow stairways connecting neighborhoods, and views that surprise visitors. The South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association organizes an annual Stair Trek event that's become a family-friendly tradition. The Slopes are best explored on foot; older kids especially enjoy the sense of urban adventure the stairways provide.
Cafรฉ & Food Options for Families
East Carson Street has gotten more family-friendly in recent years. The Beehive Coffee House is a long-standing neighborhood institution. The Pretzel Shop on East Carson is a Pittsburgh landmark. For sit-down family meals, options have expanded considerably โ check recent reviews for current recommendations as the restaurant landscape shifts.
