North Shore Pittsburgh Family Guide: Museums, Parks & River Fun
Pittsburgh's North Shore is one of the most activity-packed destinations for families in the city, yet it's underutilized by many Pittsburgh residents outside of game days. The North Shore sits just across the Allegheny River from downtown, accessible by the Andy Warhol Bridge or the Roberto Clemente Bridge, and it packs an extraordinary amount of family-friendly attractions into a compact, walkable area.
Carnegie Science Center
The Carnegie Science Center is the North Shore's anchor family attraction and one of the best science museums in Pennsylvania. Four floors of interactive exhibits cover physics, biology, space, and sports science. Highmark SportsWorks on the lower floor is a perennial favorite for active kids โ it includes a climbing wall, balance challenges, and sports-science experiments that kids actually do rather than just observe. The Science Center also has a submarine (USS Requin) docked outside that visitors can tour, and a full-dome planetarium with daily shows. Plan for at least three hours.
Children's Museum of Pittsburgh
Adjacent to the Science Center, the Children's Museum is designed specifically for young children (roughly ages 1โ10). The museum is housed in a beautifully renovated historic post office building and features exhibits on water play, making and building, art, and outdoor exploration. The rooftop garden is a hidden gem in summer. Birthday party packages are available; free community admission days are offered periodically.
The Andy Warhol Museum
Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol's museum is a seven-floor celebration of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. It's more accessible to kids than you might expect โ the bold, colorful imagery translates well for young visitors, and the museum regularly offers Family Saturdays programming with hands-on art activities. Worth an hour or two, especially if you have kids who have shown an interest in art.
North Shore Riverfront Park
The riverfront trail along the North Shore offers beautiful views of the Pittsburgh skyline and the three rivers. It's flat, stroller-friendly, and connects all the way to the Millvale Riverfront Park via the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. On game days, the area is electric; on non-game days, it's a peaceful place for a family walk or bike ride.
PNC Park Tours
Even if you're not attending a Pirates game, PNC Park offers public tours that kids enjoy. The stadium is widely considered one of the most beautiful ballparks in Major League Baseball, and the views from the upper concourse โ looking back across the Allegheny at the Pittsburgh skyline โ are genuinely spectacular.
