Indoor Activities for Kids in Pittsburgh This Winter

Pittsburgh winters can be brutal. The gray skies settle in by November and often don't lift until April, and with kids who need to burn energy, cabin fever sets in fast. The good news: Pittsburgh has an excellent collection of indoor options for families, many of them free or low-cost.

Carnegie Museums: Natural History & Art

The Carnegie Museums complex in Oakland is Pittsburgh's indoor crown jewel for families. The Museum of Natural History has dinosaur halls that delight kids of every age, gem and mineral collections, an Egyptian mummy exhibit, and a discovery room designed specifically for young visitors. The Museum of Art next door is free for Carnegie Library cardholders on select days. Budget 3โ€“4 hours for both if your kids are museum-goers.

Carnegie Science Center

On the North Shore, the Carnegie Science Center is one of Pittsburgh's best family destinations any time of year but especially in winter. The four floors of interactive science exhibits cover everything from submarines to space exploration. The Highmark SportsWorks section is particularly popular with kids โ€” it's physical, hands-on, and genuinely educational. Don't miss the live science shows scheduled throughout the day.

The Andy Warhol Museum

Also on the North Shore, the Warhol is one of Pittsburgh's most distinctive cultural institutions and surprisingly accessible for kids. The building spans seven floors with rotating exhibitions. Children are often drawn to the pop art imagery and the interactive elements. Check for Family Saturdays programming, which offers hands-on art activities for kids.

Phipps Conservatory

In winter, Phipps in Oakland hosts its annual Winter Flower Show โ€” one of the most popular family events in Pittsburgh. Walking through tropical greenhouses when it's 20 degrees outside is a genuinely special experience. The Spring Flower Show and Butterfly Forest in spring are equally good. Membership pays off quickly if you visit 2โ€“3 times per year.

Pittsburgh Indoor Sports Facilities

For active kids who just need to run, Pittsburgh has several indoor sports facilities that offer open gym and open play sessions. The YMCA branches throughout the city offer family memberships that include pool access and gym time. Community recreation centers in neighborhoods like Brookline, Beechview, and Brighton Heights often have open gym times at no or low cost.

Winter in Pittsburgh is long, but with the right rotation of indoor activities, it's very manageable. Check our event calendar for the latest programming at these venues โ€” most have special winter schedules worth bookmarking.
